Information on REQUIREMENTS FOR HIGHER EDUCATION STUDY SESSION 1: ACTIVITY 3: PART 3 – REQUIREMENTS FOR HE STUDY
Purpose - Information sharing - familiarise teachers with the minimum admission requirements for HE study - possible pathways of further study (what is the grade 12 teacher teaching towards?)
The policy document: minimum admission requirements for Higher Education • provides statutory minimum admission requirements for HE study • replace range of current policies with one single policy framework • Applicable to all HEIs – private and public • Applies to Higher Certificate, Diploma and Bachelor Degree Programmes • Effective from 1 January 2009
Policy Considerations • Higher Education South Africa (HESA)= body to set minimum admission requirements for Higher Certificate, Diploma and Bachelor Degree Programmes requiring NSC • HEIs = set specific admission requirements for particular programmes • Applies specifically to learners using NSC as route to HE study
Possibilities for higher education • higher education doesn’t necessarily mean a university degree • but provides possibilities of specialised employment • Various qualifications and access to these depend on your performance - HEIs may set requirements that are higher than the minimum requirements in the document.
ALL require a NSC, but differ in achievement ratings required
BACHELOR’S DEGREE • Rating of 4+ (50%+) in four NCS subjects appearing on the designated subject list • appropriate combinations of NCS subjects at specified levels of achievement • example: • Bachelor’s Degree in Science – offer Maths and Science and achieve at specified level in both subjects • DIPLOMA • rating of 3+ (40%+) in any four NCS subjects • appropriate combinations of NCS subjects at specified levels of achievement • example: • Diploma in Datametrics - achieve at a prescribed level in Mathematics or IT HIGHER CERTIFICATE • appropriate combinations of NCS subjects at specified levels of achievement • example: Higher Certificate in Architectural Design – achieve at specified level in Design and an associated NCS subject
Recognised NCS Subjects • Subjects bearing 20 credits, excluding LO (10 credits) • NSC = common basis for admission • list applicable for 3 years, then review • Responsibility of HEIs to decide on subject combinations for particular programmes and publicise widely so that learners can be properly advised on subject choices
