  14. The Nature of Man • God created man, Gen.1:26-27 • After which, “God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good,” v.31 • Ecclesiastes 7:29 “Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright (straight, level, proper); but they have sought out many inventions(schemes, contrivances).”

  15. If everything was very good after God created, we were created with a good nature. • If our good nature became corrupted after creation, we would have to also conclude that Jesus took on a corrupted sinful nature when He took on ahumanbody, for He came “in the likeness of men”(Philippians 2:7). “In all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren” (Hebrews 2:17).

  16. “All things” means that He took our complete nature so He could face sin from our perspective, thus He “was in all points tempted like as we are” (Hebrews 4:15). • If His nature was not like ours, He could not have been tempted in all points like we are. • Jesus had the same feelings, appetites, sensations, and bodily passions as mankind in general.

  17. The Only Scriptural & Reasonable Conclusion! • If Jesus did not have a corrupted human nature after He was made in all points like we are made, • Then it must follow that we do not have a corrupted and sinful nature. • Even though He faced the same factors that we face in our struggle with sin, He remained sinless.

  18. Factor One • God created for our enjoyment everything that can bring pleasure to our senses. • “Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness” (Acts 14:17).

  19. “Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;” (I Timothy 6:17).” • “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” (James 1:21).

  20. Factor Two • God created our strong feelings, senses, appetites, and bodily passions so that we can experience and enjoy all the good things He has created and is providing for us to enjoy. • “Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.” (Ecclesiastes 5:19).

  21. “Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth…and be thou ravished always with her love.” (Proverbs 5:18-19). • Every passion God has given us is strong and good, and can bring great enjoyment when engaged correctly. • Because they are so strong, some may think they are sinful passions. • WRONG! The misuse is wrong.

  22. Factor Three • We have the power of choice! • Will we use our faculties for pleasures inside or outside God’s parameters. • Moses chose “rather to suffer afflictions with the people of God than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season” (Heb.11:24-25). • We are not puppets on a string. • God is praised by those who cheerfully choose to serve Him according to His will (Matthew 4:10; 7:21; II Corinthians 9:7).

  23. Factor Four • The devil uses the good things God created for us to tempt us to use them contrary to the purpose for which God has given them to us. • Our warfare is against who? (Eph.6:10-11). • He tries to deceive us by offering us what seemingly will give us freedom to enjoy boundless pleasures. • Instead they cause us harm and make us miserable slaves(John 8:44).

  24. Test Case • In Genesis 3, Eve did not have a sinful nature, so why did she sin? • Satan tempted Eve (II Cor.11:3) by appealing to her appetite, her ability to appreciate the sight of appealing food, and her freedom to make a choice to eat or not to eat. • She was not punished because she was motivated by her God-given senses to eat but because she allowed Satan to use them to entice her to disobey God.

  25. A Comparison • Ahunter baits a trap with food that is “mouth-watering” to the animal he wants to catch. • The animal’s passion for food is good and not bad. • What is bad is that the animal does not realize that going into the trap to satisfy his good appetite for the tasty food will cause him to be trapped. • Satan’s approach is the same.

  26. That Is Solomon’s Point “…rejoice with the wife of thy youth…be thou ravished always with her love…why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?” Proverbs 5:18-20 • Both can provide the same appeal and the same pleasure. • One authorized and the other not! • It really is that simple & easily understood.

  27. More Factual Evidence • Satan tried to tempt Jesus through His human appetite, like his craving for food, to satisfy His hunger (Luke 4:2-13). • Satan was the cause of the downfall of both Judas (John 13:2), Ananias & Sapphira(Acts 5:2) through their freedom of choice. • The devil seeks to tempt us, not by appealing to a sinful human nature but by the good strong passions God gave us, to experience the enjoyable things God has provided for us.

  28. Enslavement “...whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin” (John 8:34). “His servants ye are to whom ye obey” (Rom.6:16). Paul also wrote of the “...snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will” (II Tim.2:26). Peter wrote, “for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.” (II Peter 2:19).

  29. Why Do We Sin? “But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. (15) Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death,” James 1:14-15

  30. Why Do We Sin? • Satan tempts us to satisfy our good senses, appetites, sensations, and bodily passions contrary to God’s intended purposes. • Our passions, which are strong and good when fulfilled correctly, can be our downfall if we allow Satan to trick us into indulging them in the wrong way.
