Gallery Walk Expectations • At your own pace, walk the Harlem Renaissance gallery and silently take in each piece of artwork • On the post-its supplied, write down 1-2 sentences about the emotion that you feel when you look at the work • Attach the post-it to the work description • The music coming from the speakers is a piece of artwork too!
Questions for Discussion: • 1. What feelings, all in all, did you feel were conveyed by a majority of the work? • 2. What themes did you see connecting all of the pieces of art? • 3. Based on what you’ve seen, what do you think the Harlem Renaissance was? • 4. What does “renaissance” mean?
The Great Migration • Between 1910 and 1930, 1.6 million African Americans moved from the South and Southwest into the Northern Cities • Educated African Americans were able to get jobs, but many still faced discrimination in the workplace • In the early 1920s, there was a rebirth of the Klu Klux Klan
The Harlem Renaissance • Art, music, poetry, sculpture was created by African American artists to express the joy, pride, and pain of being African American • These became wildly successful, and were shared on stages and in museums for all Americans
Discussion Question • How effectively do you feel like these pieces of art conveyed the experience of African Americans during the time period in which they were created?
