Program Evaluation Questions • What changes are made in school environments as a result of the Active Schools program? • Do students in participating schools show: • Improved fitness relative to other WI schools • Increased activity levels as measured by activity logs and pedometers? • More 7-day and previous day activity than the norm in WI schools • Is change in school-level activity-levels and/or fitness related to school-level outcomes (such as attendance, achievement, disciplinary event)

School-Wide Fitness Level AssessmentsPACER • Fall 2010: Gather pre-intervention aerobic capacity levels • Grades 4-11 • Fitnessgram PACER scores • Other Fitnessgram tests (if conducted in school) • Collected among all students in Physical Education class • Results uploaded from school computer to UW Pediatrics • Same assessment to be conducted in Fall 2011—new cohort of students • We would like the fall assessment in late October

Physical Activity and Fitness Measures 3 Designated Classrooms
General Procedure • Collection of activity logs and pedometer readings in 3 separate classrooms in grades 4 through 11 • Same students will be involved in fitness testing with results linked to the classroom activities through an ID# generated by either a(n)… • Existing ID currently used by schools for fitness testing • Fitnessgram generated ID# • During the 2010-11 school year, the same students will have data collected in both the Fall and Spring semesters 8
General Procedure continued • Same student ID# as used for Fitnessgram will be used for classroom activities • Whoever enters the FitnessGram information needs to share the student ID with the classroom teacher collecting the Activity Log information

Classroom Selection Sample from across grade levels (not the same grade level) Ideally, classes that meet entire year Or a combination of classes which can insure participation by the same students both semesters Classes that are not tracked: Avoid honors or remedial classes Avoid electives which reflect homogeneous students Not Seniors in High School or “transition” years Recommended—classes where activity logging and use of pedometers can be integrated into curriculum. E.g., PE, Health, other sciences or math
ID# Determination/Coordination • An unique ID# for each student is necessary to coordinate Fitness scores and Activity Logs • Schools have two options for determining an ID • Option #1 • Use an existing ID# that schools currently use for fitness testing
ID# Determination/Coordination • Option #2 • The ID will be based on the student’s Fitnessgram records • Due to this, you need to enter student data into the FitnessGram first • When a Fitnessgram record is created for a student, an ID is also generated by Fitnessgram • Retrieval of the Fitnessgram ID is shown on the next slide

ID# Determination/Coordination The Fitnessgram generated ID needs to be communicated with the classroom teacher(s) It is important that the classroom teacher(s) and PE teachers coordinate to insure that the correct information is logged for the same student. The same ID# will be used for the same student for both submissions
Data Submission • Data will be submitted in the Fall and Spring • Classroom information to be mailed to DPI will be entered in one (1) booklet per student • When submitted to DPI, the booklet will not contain names. • Should only have ID# that will be used for both the fall and spring data submissions. • FitnessGram testing data will be submitted electronically to UW
Research Export Function • To prepare the data for submission, you will be using the Research Export Function on the Fitnessgram software • As a part on this function there will be three boxes which can be checked or unchecked • De-Identify Student Names (please check) • De-Identify Student Numbers (Keep Unchecked) • Remove blank records (please check)
Physical Activity logs • The following measures will be entered into a Activity Booklet • Physical Activity Log • 3 Day Physical Activity Recall • Pedometer Readings (3 consecutive days)—same days as activity log • Two activity recall questions • 7 Day • Previous Day
