  1. Ralph the Stick Insect Julie Murphy

  2. Ralph the Stick Insect is thin, green and long,

  3. But if you thought him a stick, you would be wrong.

  4. He looks like a stick, though he lives in the trees.

  5. And hides in the branches amongst the green leaves.

  6. But Ralph is an insect; he isn’t a plant..

  7. He’s got six good legs like a moth or an ant.

  8. He has two round eyes and two wings for flying.

  9. He doesn’t fly well but keeps on trying.

  10. He won’t live that long, he’s got a short life.

  11. He grows for six months then he takes a wife,

  12. He mates like crazy; he’s got six months more,

  13. And then it’s all over. He drops to the floor.

  14. But now Ralph’s alive so he makes each day last,Lives life to the full because the days go so fast.

  15. Our Ralph likes his life way up in the trees, gazing afar and shooting the breeze.

  16. Chewing on leaves without any woes, swaying like other sticks when the wind blows.

  17. Freezing when danger comes anywhere near, looking just like a stick, despite his fear.

  18. Keep so silent and still as a stone, til the bad guys have gone and leave him alone.

  19. Up close he looks weird, up close he looks mean,

  20. Two bulging eyes and five mouth parts, all green,

  21. Two long antennae for feeling the air,

  22. Thick coat of armour. Take him on? Who’d dare!

  23. Spines on his legs make the finishing touch. This little guy is really too much.

  24. But he is an insect; he’s not all bad, he’s got his place in the world so be glad.
