  2. Research Question • What do the writings of the Puritans have to teach modern American students? • Is there anything relevant to our world? • Is a study of history necessary to understanding our world?

  3. Assignment • Using at least four of the sources from our study of Puritans, write an essays that responds to our research question. • Your paper should be 3-5 pages long. A Works Cited page is required. MLA format…of course. • Your purpose is both expository and persuasive. • Rough drafts for peer editing are due on ____________. Bring one copy for you and ONE additional copy for a peer to edit. (Yes, that means your rough drafts must be typed.

  4. Expository Purpose • Expository writing informs, explains, or otherwise creates interest in a topic. • In this paper, your expository purpose is to explain the basic ideas of Puritanism using the sources we have read and discussed in class. • All assertions about Puritanism must be documented with specific evidence from a text.

  5. Persuasive Purpose • After explaining what Puritanism is and how it influenced our society, you need to answer the research question about the relevance of learning about the Puritans in modern America. • Your essay must have a claim (thesis statement) which clearly states your position and the reasons for it.

  6. Discussion Questions • What are the main ideas about Puritanism that you have learned? • What positive aspects of Puritanism can you find in what you have learned? • What are the negative aspects? • What EVIDENCE from the texts that we have read support your explanation of Puritanism?
