What is Educational Programme? WHAT youth members do (activities) + HOW they do it (methods) + WHY they do it (purpose)
What is the point of Girl Guiding/Girl Scouting? Why does it matter to you?
WAGGGS mission… “to enable girls and young women to develop their fullest potential as responsible citizens of the world” …is about education.
What kind of education? • Non-formal • Learner centred development • Voluntary • Lifelong • Values based • Relevant • Attractive
Why it matters • Listen to youth members to ensure our education is what they need to fulfil their potential. • Educational Programme is what girls see of Girl Guiding/Girl Scouting. To grow membership, it must be relevant and exciting. • The world is changing fast. Girl Guiding/Girl Scouting has to be flexible and prepared to change too.
WAGGGS must change too! • Support in Educational Programme development increasingly requested by MOs and Regions • Adult Training, Learning and Development policy and guidelines recently updated • Educational Programme Policy and Guidelines last updated in 1997. • World Thinking Day 2014 theme is education; opportunity to do more.
WAGGGS will… • Offer tailored capacity building support to Member Organisations in Educational Programme development. • Bring Educational Programme and Adult Training work together, to see how programmes are both developed and delivered. • Support Member Organisations to integrate WAGGGS initiatives into their programmes
New Educational Programme Policy: key principles • Focus on quality non-formal education • Flexible, accessible, inclusive • Girls develop leadership at all ages • Method and values still central, but described in a modern way • How we can grow the skills young people need to thrive, today.
