  1. Literature: Monday, December 9, 2013 revised Handouts: * Reading Chart for Dec. 9 – 15 Homework: * Read AR book 20 – 30 minutes & record progress on chart* STUDY for Lit Test #4: Informational Reading Unit Assignments Due:Reading Chart for Dec. 2 – 8

  2. Today’s Goal: Finish learning to identify five propaganda techniques. Outcomes: Name five frequently used propaganda techniques in advertising. Define the following terms: loaded language, testimonial, bandwagon, transfer, repetition. State a slogan for each of the five propaganda techniques. Identify each of the five propaganda techniques in advertising.

  3. Starter #1: This week we talked about “propaganda.” What is “propaganda”? Using language, ideas, and information to support one side of a position (argument/opinion) while discrediting the other. What five propaganda devices (or techniques) did we learn about over the past two days? Loaded language Words carefully chosen in order to provoke a certain emotional response Example: “A group of children, sitting in the park” “A gang of hooligans, loitering in the park” Testimonial When a famous person supports a particular product or idea/opinion Bandwagon Communicating that something is desirable because “everyone is doing it”

  4. Starter #2: What were the two other propaganda techniques we learned about? Transfer Using images (pictures or photos) to get people to connect with a desirable feeling Repetition Using the same words or pictures repeatedly so they stick in your mind Use your powers of observation to analyze each one of these PP slides as we finish examining . . . “Five Propaganda Techniques” We will do one follow-up page of Cornell Notes to review afterward.

  5. Starter #3: Add to your Cornell Notes . . . Define the following terms: • 1. Transfer • 2. Repetition State the slogan for each of these: • 1) Bandwagon • 2) Loaded words • 3) Testimonial • 4) Transfer • 5) Repetition • 1. Using images (pictures or photos) to get people to connect with a certain desirable feeling • 2. Using the same words or pictures repeatedly so they stick in your mind • 1) “Everyone else is doing it!” • 2) “Those words are powerful.” • 3) “I trust celebrities and experts.” • 4) “A picture is worth a thousand words.” • 5) “I remember things that I see (or hear) often.” Hmmm . . . I wonder if I will see these concepts on my next Lit test. . . .
