Anatomical terminology Body sections Relative positions Body regions
Sectioning the body provides a way to see and orient internal structures • Sagittal plane • Transverse plane • Coronal (frontal) plane
Relative positions- comparing the position of one body part to another What is the anatomical position? Superior, anterior- above, below Anterior (ventral), posterior (dorsal)- toward the front, toward the back Medial, lateral- toward the middle, away from the middle Proximal, distal- nearer the point of attachment, farther Superficial, deep- near the surface, more internal
Body regions Terminology helps localize and orient body parts Regions Quadrants refer to parts of the abdominal region
You will see these terms frequently when we name various organs (particularly muscles) Note that there are different terms for anterior and posterior regions The only way to learn this is: practice, practice, practice!
