CHALLENGES: 3T’S • Let’s discuss three major challenges: • Tribal Knowledge • Turnover • Timing
TECHNOLOGY DISCLAIMER GOOD TO GREAT • We are going to talk about challenges overcome by certain technology. • Jim Collins, Good to Great • Technology is not the catalyst • It is “the pioneering application of carefully selected technologies” that move organizations from good to great
CHALLENGES: TRIBAL KNOWLEDGE • Six Sigma Definition • Knowledge “known” yet undocumented • Past down generation to generation • Assumed to factual, but lacks data to determine factuality • “Tribe” = “Company” • Often a derogative term for poor learning structure • Further Reading • The Tribal Knowledge Paradigm- Bertain & Sibbald • The Tribal knowledge Paradox- Leonard Bertain • Will Tribal Knowledge Survive the Millennium? - Paul Alan Cox http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribal_knowledge
CHALLENGES: TRIBAL KNOWLEDGE • Concluding Ideas • Not all Tribal Knowledge is “bad” • Beneficial Examples: • Apprenticeship programs • Learning of tactile skills requires practice and mentoring (tribal) • Knowledge that can be “captured” is essential so that: • It is understood and approved by the company • It can be reused by others systematically • It can be edited and amended systematically
CHALLENGES: TURNOVER • Rate at which an employer loses employees • 2001-2006 US Turnover Rate (all industries): 39.6% • For example, at the start of the year a business had 40 employees, but during the year 9 staff resigned with 2 new hires, thus leaving 33 staff members at the end of the year. Hence this year's turnover is 25%. This is derived from, (9/((40+33)/2))*100 = 24.66%. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turnover_(employment)

CHALLENGES: TURNOVER • Concluding Ideas • Turnover is related to a variety of factors and cannot be fully-mitigated • Many costs are associated with turnover, just one of which is training new employees and “lost training efforts” • Reduce training costs related to turnover with: • Tuition reimbursement programs • Lower incremental training costs via web-based and mass-employee training efforts
CHALLENGES: TIMING • Timing is a category that poses many issues: • “Lost production” and “lost wages” comprise largest costs • Scheduling of large number of employees is difficult
CHALLENGES: 3T’S • Tribal Knowledge • Turnover • Timing • Let’s look at another realm of education for some answers.
K-12 EDUCATION • How did you “learn” in 3rd grade? • Prussian Model • Instructor Lecture • Students Listen • Assignments at Home • Lock-Step Learning (batch process)
KHAN ACADEMY THE ONE WORLD SCHOOLHOUSE • Salman Khan, Founder • Movement: Flipping the classroom
WHAT ARE THE PRINCIPLES? • “Mastery Learning” • Self-Paced Access • Lectures at Home • “Homework” in Class • Collaboration (students/teachers)
CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS • We’ve posed several major training challenges: Tribal Knowledge, Turnover, Timing • Hands-On, Practical Training will never go away, however, technology is enabling more to be done online • Let’s demonstrate a few technologies we utilize internally and externally, to educate workforces
VIDEO LECTURE PANOPTO • Internal YouTube • SMEs record their knowledge to share with organization • Integrate with LMS to produce gateway to content you have created • “Video Rule” • If your message: • Will need to be repeated to others • Is predominately one-way • Is over 2 minutes • Then: Record a Video
LMS ABSORB • Use Cases: • New Employee On-Boarding • Refresher Training • Technical Knowledge Training • What does it solve: • Documented, planned learning paths • Progress Tracking • Systematic Scheduling • Can integrate with live ILT by offering theory and refreshers
ILT INTERACTIVE PRESENTATION SOFTWARE • Prezi • PowerPoint with Poll Everywhere • Tablet PCs with Windows Journal • Annotation increases retention
SUMMARY • Challenges to Conquer: Tribal Knowledge, Turnover, Timing • Technologies to help: • Lecture Recording Software – Internal YouTube • Capture tribal knowledge • Efficiently capture and playback for entire company • Learning Management System – Control lesson plans and learning objectives by student • ILT Interactivity – Improve retention with annotation and interaction • Examples of VILT and OD in action • Fundamentals of Rigging Engineering Program • Intermediate & Advanced Rigging Courses
