  7. Our Mission… familyWORKS is governed by families to help families: • Explore ideas to increase the economic inclusion of people with disabilities. • Partner with members within the economic community. • Create economic inclusion plans and put those plans in motion. • Share our lessons and successes with others.

  8. familyWORKS is guided by a 4 phase strategic plan.

  9. Phase #1 Governance Development familyWORKS is governed and led by a group of families interested in supporting other families to explore and create economic inclusion strategies that will help to ensure family members economic futures

  10. Phase #2Information Gathering and Partnership Development familyWORKS willconduct a one year information gathering initiative, the findings of which will be translated into 3-5 Economic Inclusion Ideas. familyWORKS will enlist the partnership of families, economic institutional leaders, and Enterprise Owners/Operators to transform the Economic Inclusion Ideas into strategies for economic inclusion.

  11. Phase #3 - Implementation • The partners will develop and implement their economic inclusion strategies. • A comprehensive menu of resources to support the economic inclusion strategies will be incorporated in each plan.

  12. Phase #4 – Project Evaluation • Learn the Lessons and Measure Success: familyWORKS will produce a document that chronicles our work, measures success and sets out recommendations for the on-going work of familyWORKS. • Share the Success: A speaker’s series ( familyWORKS Governance Group and Partners) will share the success of this project and engage more families and economic partners.

  13. Evolution of Work for People with Disabilities In British Columbia • Sheltered workshops are: • Deficit based • No choice • Not person-centered • People clustered together • Perpetual training • Work Crews, Enclaves • At the time, it was the right thing to do....

  14. Supported Employment • Depends on the labour market • Competitive employment • Co-worker supports (Natural supports) • Person-centered planning • Assistive technology • Instructional strategies • Accommodations and supports • More inclusive than sheltered workshops • Risk of stereotypical jobs and inappropriate job match

  15. Customized Employment • Builds on supported employment • Discovery (Person-centered planning) • Strengths and preferences are identified to find Ideal Conditions of Employment • Job duties are matched to strengths and preferences • Negotiation is required with employer to find jobs within jobs (job carving) • Must meet the needs of both the employer and the focus person. • Fold in natural supports and job coach fades

  16. Self -Employment • Is an option • Provides flexibility • Matched with strengths and preferences • Resource ownership (means of production) gives power.
