Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Summary of independent research: field failure rates and TCO of commercial vs. rugged notebooks deployed into mobility or vertical market applications: • Commercial notebooks fail at a much higher rate than rugged notebooks – 5.9% vs. 27% - approximately 4.5x greater annual failure rate • The annual total cost of ownership of a commercial notebook is 57% higher than that of a rugged notebook • By the third year over 83% of commercial notebooks originally deployed into mobility applications have been replaced compared to just 18% for rugged • The primary source of failures are displays, hard drives and accessories • The primary cause of failures are drops, vibration, temperature and water/liquid ingress • “…Being able to marry the best possible mobile computer with the target user and application is ultimately what will set apart mobility innovators. It is imperative to balance the user, application, deployment environment and—perhaps most importantly—the mission criticality of the applications”, (VDC)
