  1. LONMIN LEGEND From Relatively Easy to Easy Peasy Permit Processing

  2. Lonmin Brief • The Lonmin brief was to provide a fast, accurate and consistently safe electronic Permit to Work application thereby saving time wasted by people waiting for their Permits, especially during a shut and at the same time ensure consistent safety adherence

  3. The Lonmin Difference • In the Beginning • Works Order data from SAP sent to IntelliPERMIT as a header on the • Permit Certificate • 2. Access control and Lonmin SACO access validation used to temporarily • manage competency validity. • Hazards and PPE’s presented to Permit initiator • Precautionary and Preparatory questions used as a sort of continuous • Risk assessment • 5. Activities included multiple activities for selection • e.g. Hotwork + Confined space

  4. Lonmin Growth EPC implemented as a Pilot site in early 2012 Experienced a 3 hour time saving on their first shut 47 pre-planned permits issued in the first 30 minutes of the Shut Result of Pilot given go ahead to implement Smelter and K4 Unfortunately due to he unprecedented troubles in Marikana middle 2012, K4 shelved. 6. Smelter implemented September 2012 with 14 Units 7. Due to Smelter success, K4 request transferred to Rowland Concentrator 8. Rowland went live early 2013 9. K3 given to next implement, staff changes delayed K3 and K3 is still to go live 10. However, due to the excellent acceptance of IntelliPERMIT the go ahead was given to implement EPL. 11. EPL went live August 2013

  5. Challenges • The first challenge presented was the access control management of user • Competencies. • 2. The next challenge was single selection capability of activities • 3. After using InteliPERMIT for some time it was felt that the Permit Initiation • and Issuing was taking too long due to the multitude of questions being asked • especially considering that Lonmin’s policy is to have paper based risk • assessments completed. • CHANGES • 1. Early in 2012 the access control link was de-activated due to multiple areas • A change to activity selection was made to allow multiple activity selection • The next change made was to simplify and speed up the Permit process by • removing all questions linked to areas and hazards and line the permit up • with Lonmin FRCPs • Result • Lonmin now are evaluating a lean and mean easy peasy Permit process that caters • for their FRCP’s by presenting applicable Preparatory questions when the High risk • Activities are selected.
