  1. Life During the Depression (11.2) • 2 (e-g): The key concepts of continuity and change, cause and effect, complexity, unity and diversity over time. • 3e. Analyze ideas critical to the understanding of American history. • 3f. Describe and analyze the historical development and impact of the arts and literature on the culture of the United States.

  2. Daily Life • people stood in bread lines for food • Families/individuals who couldn’t pay mortgage lost homes • Many wandered around the U.S. looking for work (hobos)

  3. Hoovervilles: - group of shacks put up the home- less on unused and/or public lands-also called shantytowns

  4. events that turned Great Plains into the “Dust Bowl”:1) Farmers tilled up natural prairie grass that held the soil’s moisture and planted wheat 2) Crop prices dropped in 1920s Result: many farmers didn’t plant crops, leaving the land exposed

  5. Events that turned Great Plains into the “Dust Bowl”: 3) 1932: drought hit region - rain that did fall turned soil to dust

  6. Effects of “Dust Bowl” on pop. in Midwest:1) farmers: lost fields and forced to move 2) Many people left Midwest and went to CA in search of a better life

  7. Discussion • In your opinion, did those who left the Midwest find a better life in the location they moved to? Why/why not?

  8. Comic Books • Began as re-prints of Newspaper comics • Late 1930s: “Superhero” genre was created • Superman (1938) • Batman (1939)

  9. Hollywood Factory Fantasy- Films made by Hollywood - Allowed people to forget about their stress/hardships of Depression for a few hrs. - (e.g. Snow White, King Kong, Wizard of Oz)

  10. Radio - Made entertainment more personable- Created a new type of community (strangers found common ground discussing characters’ lives on the radio)

  11. Literature & Photography1) John Steinbeck: The Grapes of Wrath - portrayed daily life of GD2) Dorothea Lange & Margaret Bourke- White - showed through pictures daily life of GD

  12. How ’20s and 30s Art/media similar:- Both 1920s and 1930s artists depicted real life

  13. How ‘20s and ‘30s Different: - 1920s focused on both glamorous as well as the tragic- 1920s focused on the glory and disenchantment of society. - 1930s were more negative: focused on the hardships of society only
