Objective of this talk How using the Kew thesaurus via iLink helps our users to reach their search goals OR How to turn a keen amateur into a semi-professional botanist.
Background • Unicorn implemented in 1991 • WebCat / iLink installed 2001 • Live on Intranet since May 2002 • Launch on Internet in Autumn 2002 as part of iKEW : a new institution-wide electronic information provision strategy for the 21st century.
Kew Users • Internal: Kew staff, mostly scientists, plus visitors, all have high level of botanical expertise and knowledge of Latin nomenclature • External: Subject specialists worldwide, plus lay-people with knowledge of vernacular plant names
Our Thesaurus • No adequate thesaurus available, so using various sources for terminology a) CAB thesaurus (Agriculture & Health terminology) b) Vascular plant families and genera by R.K. Brummitt • Currently terms entered during cataloguing • Future possible download of terminology
