What is the CELDT • The CELDT is a state English language assessment that is required for students in grades k-12th • The CELDT was developed to identify a student’s English language proficiency level • The CELDT is used to determine how much progress a student has made in acquiring English language proficiency
Who takes the CELDT New students English learners Students who have previously been identified as English learners, and have not met the re-designation criteria • New students entering the district for the first time, and whose Home Language Survey indicates a language other than English.
Do English learners with disabilities take the CELDT • Yes.Students with disabilities who participate in the CELDT may use variations, accommodations, and/or modifications. • Students with disabilities may take an alternate assessment if they’re IEP team determines that they are unable to take one or all parts of the test even with variations, accommodations, and or modifications.
When is the CELDT administered New students English learners Annually, during the official testing window; July 1st through October 31st • Throughout the year, students are administered the CELDT within 30 days of their enrollment
Test Content • The CELDT is aligned to the California English Language Development Standards.The CELDT assesses the 4 domains of English Language Arts; listening, speaking, reading and writing.

How and when are test results received by parents • School districts must send individual CELDT results to parents or guardians within 30 calendar days after they are received by the school district. It takes an average of eight weeks to score the tests and return results to school districts after they are received by the test contractor.
