  3. Climate • Average Temperature -34˚C -In the summer average 3-12˚C • 15-25 centimeters a year

  4. Main Plants • Sedges are one of the most important plants the tundra. They are also an essential source of food for herbivores such as: lemmings, geese, and caribou. They also provide shelter for the smaller animals in the tundra. Some sedges have fluffy white flowers that give rise to their common name, “cottongrass.” Four species of cottongrassgrow on Alaska’s North Slope.

  5. Main Animals • Artic foxes are secondary consumers that scavenge meat from dead animals and eat berries. Foxes mate in April, and their babies called kits are born in June. Kits grow quickly, and within 3 weeks they emerge from the den and begin to explore. During the winter they roam more than 600 miles.

  6. Interesting Fact • The only tree that grows in the harsh climate of Arctic tundra is the dwarf willow, with an average height of only 4 inches.
