End of WW 1 – Treaty of Versailles Consequences 1. Germany Germany thought treaty was very unfair • Very reduced army • Had to pay 33 Billion dollars to other countries for damages • Had to give up land taken – winning countries could stay in Germany
2. New countries • Treaty took land away from Austria-Hungary, Russia, and Germany to make new countries. • Germans didn’t want to live in new countries
3. Governments Fascism: “a political philosophy, movement, or regime that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition” Communism: “ totalitarian system of government in which a single authoritarian party controls state-owned means of production”
Italy didn’t get land from Treaty of Versailles • Felt cheated and wanted strong leader • Benito Mussolini – dictator - fascist Soviet Union also lost land because of Treaty of Versailles Russian Revolution in 1917 created a Communist Government Josef Stalin – dictator - communist
Germany had very hard time during The Depression and still had to pay war debts • Wanted a leader who would solve all their problems • Adolph Hitler – Fascist – Dictator • Nazi – German Fascist Party Japan Emperor Hirohito - considered divine – followed wishes of military
4. League of Nations • Formed to keep peace after WWI to solve conflicts and protect countries if they were attacked. • Most powerful countries didn’t enforce Treaty of Versailles • Appeasement – believed Italy, Germany, Japan would be satisfied and not use aggression.
Aggressive Expansion 1938 – 1939 Germany seized Czechoslovakia Germany and France promised to protect Poland if it was attacked by Germany Germany attacks Poland Sept 1 1939 Britain and France declare war on Germany Sept 3 1939 World War II starts!!
