  6. Grad Transitions Requirements Include: 150 minutes physical fitness per week 30 hours volunteer or work experience Transition Plan Students will be provided with more information and direction for completing the requirements of Grad Transitions, at the beginning of Grade12

  9. Entrance to College or BCIT LANGARA KWANTLEN DOUGLAS BCIT Individual programs have their own requirements. Note – All Colleges & Univ. now have a required minimum GPA for English. If this is not met, students will be required to write a Language Proficiency Index (LPI) test.

  14. **Provincial Exams: Students do not have to write a provincial exam for any course except English 12. All other Gr. 12 provincial exams are optional. **Advanced Placement (AP) Courses: AP exams written in May. Scores determine student’s possible exemption to first year level course in that subject area.

IDS – Independent Directed Study • Allows flexibility in educational opportunities • Senior students can explore an interest and design a course of study outside of the offered course list • Links curriculum to a career area • Criteria: • Student must demonstrate the ability to work independently with minimal supervision • The IDS course must be approved by the supervising teacher and principal • The IDS will count towards elective credit • Under supervision, the IDS plan must include: • The problem, project or area to be studied • A process for ongoing facilitation and evaluation • Criteria for determining successful completion • A credit value and grade level (11 or 12)

  16. Implications of Math • Any Math 11 course will graduate a student from high school with a Dogwood Certificate. • Applications is a mid-level math that will graduate a student with a Dogwood. Applications of Math 11 will allow a student to go on to college & many BCIT programs. • Students must have Applications of Math 12 to enter ‘Arts’ at SFU and UVIC. • Applications of Math 12 will not allow a student to enter Sciences or Engineering at SFU and UVIC. • UBC does not accept Applicationsof Math. *Be aware of all possible post-secondary requirements when selecting courses

Work Experience- 4 Credits for 90 hours of work- must take 4 support courses, at least 2 at the Gr. 12 level, from the following focus areas: • Fine Arts, Design & Media • Fitness & Recreation • Business & Applied Business • Health & Human Services • Liberal Arts & Humanities • Science & Applied Science • Tourism, Hospitality & Foods • Trades & Technology

  18. Secondary Apprenticeship • A career program that offers students the opportunity to begin an apprenticeship while still in school • Must find your own placement with a certified tradesperson willing to oversee training • 4 credits for each 120 of paid employment – up to a maximum of 16 credits (480 hours) • Attend school half time, work half time • Opportunity to earn $1000 scholarship • Trade areas include: Aerospace, Cosmetology, Electrical and Electronics, Construction, Graphic Arts, Horticulture, Hospitality, Lumber Manufacturing, Marine, Mechanical/Repair, Piping, Security Services, Motion Picture and Theatre, Parts/Warehousing, …..

  19. Ace it! • Ace it (Accelerated Credit Enrollment in Industry Training) • Open to Gr. 11 and 12 students interested in entry-level trades training • Most programs are dual credit and offered in partnership with post-secondary institutions • Program schedule depends on school site (semester or linear), but like apprenticeship, Ace it runs on a half time school, half time work schedule • Programs include: • Cook • Auto Service Technician • Construction Electrician • Carpenter • Applications due: March 31st

Academies • The Delta School District offers academies in: • Baseball (Sands Secondary) • Girls Soccer (South Delta Secondary) • Softball (Seaquam Secondary) • Hockey (South Delta Secondary/Burnsview Secondary) • Golf (Seaquam Secondary) • Film Acting (South Delta Secondary) • Dance (Delta Secondary)( Proposed for 2011 -2012) Please visit web.deltasd.bc.ca/programs/academies for more information!

  21. External Credit Options Students can receive credit from the Ministry of Education for activities and learning outside of the regular school setting. Examples include: • Young Drivers • External Athletics • Life Saving • Music • Dance • Cadets / Guides / Scouts • Coursework • Other…*students should see their counsellor

  22. Language Challenge Exams Students with a background in Mandarin, Spanish, Punjabi, Korean, and German may apply to write a Challenge exam to earn Grade 11 and 12 credits. Those who challenge the Language 12 exam may go on to write the Provincial exam in June

Delta Access Online • The Delta School District has provided online learning opportunities for Gr.10-12 students. • Registration after Spring Break enrolls students in the April-August Session. • Online allows students to move ahead in a subject area, make up missed credits, and take a course that may not be available at their home school. • Courses offered in the areas of: • English • Mathematics • Social Studies • Science • Business Education

  24. Summer School • Full Credit (6 week) • Remedial (4 week) • Must have a final grade between 40-49% • Below 40% - student is recommended to take full credit course • Forms are now available – see your counsellor

  25. Things to keep in mind… • Select 8 courses to maximize opportunity – it’s easier to drop than pick up in September • Choose wisely – be in the know of all grad and post-secondary entrance requirements • Courses run based on interest, so choose them now – don’t expect to be able to get into them later • It is not ‘first come first served’ – take your time to make thoughtful decisions – create as much opportunity for yourself as you can!
