  1. Class of 2021 Info Session Sarah deisher, academic advisor Linda Vick, Academic Advisor, Instructor Heather Whedbee, Academic Advisor

  2. We do not schedule appointments in ME. Come see us during normal business hours all year long Randolph 112 heathaw@vt.edu Randolph 113A deisher@vt.edu Randolph 113 lvick@vt.edu

  3. Main Differences between 2021 and 2022 • Class of 2021: • Choice of computer programming elective • Thermo/fluids: ME2124 (C-, 2 cr) + ME3124 (3 cr) + ME3404 (3 cr) (8 credits total) • Take ME3514 (system dynamics) plus controls or vibrations (6 credits total) • ME3614 is 3 credits • ECE3254, ME4006 are required • 15 credits tech electives (max 6 credits from List #2) • 131 credits to graduate • Class of 2022: • ME 2004 (C-, 3 cr) is the ONLY programming course • Thermo/fluids: ME2134 (C-, 4 cr) + ME 3414 (4 cr w/lab) (8 credits total) or 3 old courses (8 credits total); thermo & fluids will be prerequisites for heat transfer (ME3304) • Take system dynamics, vibrations, and controls (w/lab): 2 new courses (8 credits total) or 3 old courses (9 credits total) • ME3624 includes lab (4 credits) • ECE3254, ME4006 not required (ME4006 replaced with 1 credit tech communications class, ME3034) • 12 credits tech electives (max 3 credits From List #2) • 129 credits to graduate

  4. Programming Course Class of 2021 must complete: Approved programming elective Can take ME 2004 as a List 1 technical elective IF completed programming elective Fall 2018 or earlier Class of 2022 must complete: ME 2004 (C- minimum), even completed a different programming elective Previous programming elective will count as a free elective unless otherwise specified on technical elective list Notes: • ME 2004 includes numerical methods using MATLAB for engineering applications • We will not accept transfer credit for ME 2004 as it is a unique course to Virginia Tech

  5. Thermodynamics and Fluids If you have taken ME 2124 (C- minimum): Take ME 3124 and ME 3404 while they are still being offered; these three classes will work for either 2021 or 2022. • If you have NOT taken ME 2124 (C- minimum): • Take ME 2134, 4 credits (Fall 2019) (C- required) + ME 3414, 4 credits (Spring 2020) Note: We recommend taking MSE2034 during Fall 2019 to make room for ME3414 in Spring 2020. Note: • ME 2124 will no longer be offered after Spring 2019 • ME 2134 (thermodynamics) will be offered starting Fall 2019; a C- is required to meet prerequisite and graduation requirements. • ME 3414 (fluids w/lab) will be offered starting Spring 2020

  6. Dynamic Systems Class of 2021 must complete: ME3514 + (ME3504 or ME4504 or ME3534 (controls, 4 cr) or ME3524 (4 cr) + ME3534 (4 cr) Class of 2022 must complete: • ME3514 + ME3504 + (ME4504 or ME3534) or • ME3524 (4 cr) + ME3534 (4 cr) Note: • ME 3514 will not be offered Summer 2019 or after Fall 2019 • ME 3524 (4 credits) is a combination of System Dynamics and Vibrations. It will be offered starting Fall 2019. • ME 3534 (4 credits) is the new Controls course and includes a lab.

  7. Mechanical Design Class of 2021 must complete: ME 3614 (3 credits) or ME 3624 (4 credits w/lab) Class of 2022 must complete: ME 3614 (3 credits) + approved design elective or ME 3624 (4 credits w/lab) • Notes: • ME 3614 will be offered until Spring 2020 • ME 3624 will be offered starting in Spring 2020 • If a student graduating in 2021 takes ME 3624, the extra credit will count toward technical elective credit • The approved design elective list has not been finalized, but we expect it to include: ME3604, ME4614, ME4624, ME4664, ESM3054, ESM3064, and ESM4044.

  8. Technical Electives • Class of 2021: • If you completed your programming elective Fall 2018 or earlier, ME2004 is a List #1 tech elective (if space is available). • If you take the new 4-credit classes (example: ME3624 (mech design), ME3414 (fluids), ME3534 (controls) with labs), the extra credits are List #1 tech elective credits. • 15 credits tech electives required (max of 6 credits from List #2 (List #2 includes 4000-level undergrad research & independent study.) • Class of 2022: • Previous programming courses will be free electives unless specifically listed on tech elective list • ECE3254 becomes a List #1 tech elective • 12 credits tech electives required (max of 3 credits from List #2)
