Stadium, THEN • Archon Lycurgus in 329 BC • Wooden seats during classical times, later changed to marble • Herodes Atticus in 140 AD • Enlarged to seat 50,000 • Horseshoe Construction, track (204.07 meters long and 33.35 meters wide) • Separating scales between tiers • Portico with Doric columns at base of the sphendone • Portico was placed in the stadium's facade. • Illissos River bridge, enlarged with 3 arches
Stadium, NOW • Now seats 60,000, 50 rows • Averoff’ statue stands at the entrance to the stadium • Now sits in downtown Athens, between Agra and Ardettos • Illissos River, until 1950s
History of the Stadium • Athletic portion of the Panathenaiac Greater Festival • Roman Arena, added the Northern semicircular wall. • 1870, 1875, 1896: Olympic Games • 1896, First Olympics of the Modern Era! • 2004: Archery , Marathon finish • Summer Olympic Medals of 2004 and 2008
Excavations of the Stadium • Excavated and refurbished by Zappas in 1870 • Herodes Atticus • Refurbished in 1895 by George Averoff • Pure Marble, Mount Penteli • Bridge was excavated in 1958
Panathenaiac Way • Starts at the Dipylon Gate, cuts through the Agora and leads to the Acropolis • Through the Propylaea stopping at the Erechtheum and sometimes Parthenon
History • Started at the Dipylon gate, before dawn • Sacrifices offered on the Areopagus, in front of the Athena Nike temple • Citizens entered the Propylaea • Passed ParthenonErectheum • Yearly peplos for Athena Polias, wooden statue • Parthenon • Every four years, Athena Parthenos
