Role play • Present and read the message outside with a participant • This participant will have to transmit the message to the next participant who will equally transit it to the next and so on • The last participant will have to pronounce the final message in the hall

Original message • Early pregnancies are causing a lot of havoc in this village. The Sub Divisional Officer has said that if we do not take care AIDS will invade the whole village. He thinks that a local AIDS control committee be created to damp down this plaque. meanwhile the village chief, on his part, will wish that an aunties association be formed to sensitise the youths who are more at risk, like in other localities like Nkondjock or Manjo.
Questions • What is the final message? • Why did we have the message deformed? • Are there any key elements of the first message that remains unchanged ? if yes which of them and why ? • What lesson can we learn from this exercise ?
Final Message (Previous workshop) • Chief talk say any man wé i be sexually active, make them give them their right.
Role play – Radio Drawing • Ask participants who knows how to draw • Choose two participants who will take part in a drawing competition organised by Radio Ayaba • Ask a volunteer who will play the role of a journalist and who will animate the program • Give them the instructions
Questions (after the drawing) • To those who did the drawing: Did you have problems with understanding the instructions of the drawing in the radio? • To Participants: • Do the drawings resemble the original drawing? • What is the difference with each drawing and the original one?
Lessons on the drawing • People hardly listen attentively • They often react before even listening exactly what they have to do • They draw what they think is right, what they are used to seeing, what they think is good for them • People are often influenced by their daily activities, by their beliefs, their conceptions and their own desires or personal opinion.
When talking to Adolescents, one must be: • Short • Simple (even use ‘country-talk’ if necessary) • Precise • Coherent • Logical • Consistent • And avoid imposing our own desire or opinion
Principles of communication Receiver Sender
To communicate well and have influence over Adolescents, • Look for means to talk with them • Avoid imposing choices on them • Try to understand what they think, what they are used to doing and what they are capable of doing • Show them that we respect their opinion and that we guide them to choose the most appropriate solutions to each problem
What is our target The objective of communication is the adoption of desired behaviour, of safe behaviour
What strategies should Aunties use • One to group (school, association, other small gatherings in quarters or in the village) • One to one (Adolescents are received individually, all counselling cases) • Adolescent should be welcome, respected, encouraged to express their problems and worries and the Aunties/Uncles will guide her/him to choose the appropriate solution
