Things kids will not learn in school Contributed by Joanne Graham This is a powerpoint presentation I gave to my Year Group, who, as a group were not particularly well behaved or well liked. There was a cohort of pupils who had a bad attitude to school and to learning; they felt the world owed them a living; they were not prepared to put the work in themselves but expected that the teachers would get them through their exams - because that was their job! At the time, I felt the assembly and presentation had an effect on them - they were subdued and thoughtful for a while. 5. Waiting on or cleaning is not beneath your dignity Grandparents had a different word for waiting on or cleaning – they called it opportunity.
6. If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ or teachers’ fault. Don’t whine about your mistakes – learn from them
7 Before you were born, your parents weren’t as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent’s generation, try delousing the closet in your own room
8. Your school may have done away with winners and losers and competition Life has not.
8. In some schools, they may have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
9. Life is not divided into terms or semesters. You don’t get time off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that in your own time.
10. Television is not real life In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs
11 Be nice to nerds Chances are you’ll end up working for one
