Not all women should • Women should not exercise during pregnancy if they have… • Heart problems • Preterm labor • An incompetent cervix • Lung disease
As well as… • A pregnancy with multiples • Vaginal bleeding • Ruptured membranes • Placenta previa
Awareness • Start slowly, if it has been some time since you have exercised • Consume extra daily calories • Avoid overheating • Hydrate • Staying out of the sun
Warning signs to stop • Vaginal bleeding • Dizziness/feeling faint • Increased shortness of breath • Headache • Muscle Weakness • Uterine Contractions • Decreased Fetal Movements • Chest pain
Why Not? • Some barriers for women not exercising during pregnancy include… • Fatigue • Lack of time • Nausea • Physical discomfort • Lack of child care • Fear that exercise might be unsafe
Forms of Safe exercise • Walking • Swimming • Cycling • Aerobics • Running
Activities to Avoid • Exercises on your back • Heavy lifting • Standing around for too long • Holding your breath when working out • Any exercises that can compromise your balance • Avoid jumping/jarring motions
Affects on the Baby • Birth Weight • No real evidence • Conflicting results due to the differences of methods of studying these women • Fetal Distress • Studies done have not given proof that maternal exercise contributes to fetal distress
We agree • Physical activity during pregnancy is definitely a good thing, as long as it is not against your doctor’s recommendation.
