  1. No end in sight The War in Iraq Timeline of the war in Iraq Iraq was invaded in 2003 by the U.S. There were many reasons why we invaded but there was no specific reason in particular why we invaded Iraq.

  2. March 20, 2003War Beings President Bush announces U.S. forces have begun a military operation into Iraq. That initial effort to take down Iraq's leadership with air strikes fails, clearing the way for a ground invasion. April 09,2003 A regime crumbles U.S., British, and other helping forces quickly overwhelm the Iraqi Army. Three weeks after the invasion, Iraqi civilians and U.S. soldiers pull down a statue of Saddam in Baghdad's Firdos Square.

  3. May 23, 2003 Disbanding Iraqi’s army? • After two weeks of L. Paul Bremer in Iraq, he signs an order disbanding the Iraqi army (PDF) and sends hundreds of thousands of well-armed men into the streets.

  4. Bombing At UN Headquarters August 19, 2003 • A suicide bomber driving cement mixer filled with explosives destroys the UN headquarters in Iraq, killing Sergio Vieira de Mello the UN special representative for Iraq, and twenty-two members of his staff. The United Nations immediately withdraws all nonessential employees.

  5. December 14, 2003 Saddam Captured • A dictator's bodyguard gave a tip to the U.S. that Saddam Hussein was hiding out in a man hole near his boyhood home of Tikrit. The capture for Saddam Hussein was possibly the turning point in Iraq and Washington expressed hope that rising violence would abate.

  6. April 28 , 2004 Abu Ghraib • Evidence of prisoner abuse inside the U.S.-run Abu Ghraib prison became public when pictures and evidence were found. Evidence of physical, sexual abuse, including torture, rape, and homicide of prisoners held in the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq came to public attention.

  7. May 11, 2004 Kidnappers • A U.S. businessman, Nicholas Berg, was kidnapped by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who videotaped being beheaded. It was also posted on a jihadist website. The U.S. government later claims Berg was killed at the hands of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the founder of al-Qaeda in Iraq.

  8. June 08, 2006Zarqawi killed • Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, leader of Al-Qaeda in Iraq, is killed in a U.S.-led air strike near Baquba. His bloody campaign of suicide bombings, kidnappings, and beheadings was over.

  9. deBa’athification of Iraqi Culture • Anyone associated with the ba’ath party was not allowed to get a job.
