War Debt • Estimated 2 trillion dollars of war debt by the time we are done in Iraq. • Currently we are at 1.1 trillion dollars. • This number is continuously increasing.
Troop Levels • February of 2010 was the first time since 2003 that American troops dropped below 100,000. • 50,000 troops pulled out in August if 2010. • The rest are expected to be withdrawn by the end of 2011 under and Iraqi-American security agreement.
Iraqi Military • The Iraqi Military and Ministry of Defense was completely dissolved by the American government. • It took about 5 years to make the decision to reinstall the Iraqi military. • The Iraqi military has taken control in Iraq and American troops have been diminished, being used as stability and support.
Iraqi Government • Iraq is a Parliamentary Democracy with a federal system of government. • The Iraqi National Assembly was formed, a body of 325 representatives. • A new president and Ministers were voted for and sworn in. • Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches now exist. • On October 15, 2005 a new Constitution was made. Iraqi Economy • Iraq’s economy is based largely on oil production and sales. • The economy was hurt due to the war, but the United States has been supporting Iraq with large amounts of money.
Foreign Relations • After the fall of Saddam and the Ba’ath party, Iraq has taken steps towards engagement on the international stage. • Iraq currently has diplomatic representation in 54 countries around the world. • 43 countries have diplomatic representation in Iraq.
