Describe each and provide an example. • Biosphere- all living organisms on earth • Geosphere- Earth’s surface to its center • Atmosphere- the gases that surround the earth. • Hydrosphere- all water on earth, including; in oceans, atmosphere and freshwater (above and underground) • Anthrosphere- all human being on earth 2. Do Now: Does the density of water change when it is frozen? YES- becomes LESS dense because the atoms are more spread-out • Why does warm air rise? Explain in terms of density. Because the atoms are moving quickly and more spread-out • What is the difference between circumference and diameter? How can they be measured in our classroom? 1. What is the difference between mass and weight? Mass is the amount of atoms in an object while weight is the force of gravity on an object 2. What are units for mass? grams 3. If I am 3000kg on Earth and the moon has 1/6 the gravity of Earth, what is my mass on the moon? Mass= 3000kg still- matter does not change 4. If I weigh 120lbs on Earth, what would I weigh on the moon? Weight on moon= 20lbs

To dive, water is taken into tanks, increasing density so its weight is greater than the buoyant force. The tanks are filled until the density is equal to the water to allow it to float level. Water is then released to cause the sub to rise at an angle to the surface. 2. Why does a helium balloon float? Helium is less dense than air, which is 78% N and 21% O 3. Jupiter has a diameter that is larger than ten Earth’s, how is it possible for earth to be more dense than the planet Jupiter? Jupiter is made of gas, Earth is made of dense rock and metal 4. Explain, in terms of density, why did the Titanic sink? Before the hole, Titanic was a steel balloon full of air After the hole was formed, water replaced the air on the ship causing the density to increase and the ship to sink.

The water replaced the air in the ship. Water is more dense than air, therefore, the density of the ship plus the water over-came the density of the saltwater and the ship sank. • Does a space shuttle taking off from Earth need more or less fuel than the same space shuttle taking off from the moon? LESS- the moon has less gravity (1/6) and has no atmosphere (friction) so it is easier to take off from the moon. 10g/cm3- see board for example
