What can we do? Help ALL students create a plan through and beyond high school
Benefits of long term planning • Creates buy-in to the educational process • Offers relevant themes for academic skill development • Helps students become identity achieved and builds self-esteem • Supports counseling and guidance goals by helping students develop education and career plans
Long Term Planning (cont.) • Reduces dropout rates (high school and college) • Increases matriculation into post-secondary programs • Increases recruitment and retention into technical programs • Provides skills to successfully navigate life and work transitions
50% of students who enter college never finish, BUT…. Studies show entering college freshmen who have a career plan/goal are more likely to graduate.
Nearly two-thirds of students entering college end up feeling uncertain about what to study, with many changing their majors. This results in students taking longer then four years to complete their undergraduate degree. • There's some strong evidence which links certainty about career goals, to those who stay in school. In other words, if a student goes into college with a strong idea already about what they hope to do career-wise after graduation, they have a significantly better chance of making it to their final year.
HOW LONG TERM PLANNING CAN HELP STUDENTS • Many students are taking certain classes simply to fulfill graduation requirements • Students learn how each course they take is a career education course and how each applies to the real world of work
Studies show that students who can project themselves into the future and understand the consequences of their actions today are far less likely to drop out of school (high school or college), become a teen parent, or abuse drugs. Important for ALL students

WE HAVE A STATE REQUIREMENT FOR FOUR YEAR PLAN BEFORE 9TH GRADE REGISTRATION • http://www.rules.utah.gov/publicat/code/r277/r277-462.htm#T4 • A. School district and charter school secondary schools that receive Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance funds shall complete written SEOPs for all students. • B. Plans shall be signed by parents/guardians. • C. Four year plans shall be completed for students prior to the beginning of their ninth grade years. • D. Plans shall be maintained by the student's school. • E. Students' course registration and class changes shall be consistent with their written SEOPs. • F. The SEOP process shall be carried out consistent with the policies and goals of the school districts' or charter schools' Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance Program models.

GET EACH STUDENT FOCUSED ON A TENTATIVE CAREER DIRECTION • Use Career Cluster assessment. • Go to www.utahfutures.org • Click in Interest Surveys • Click on Career Cluster Inventory • After student take the inventory the 16 clusters will appear and a bar graph will show clusters with highest scores

CTE and AT-Risk Youth A combination of 60% academic courses and 40% CTE is the most effective drop-out prevention program in the American high school. At-risk/special needs students in CTE are more likely to: Graduate from high school. Be employed. Be employed in the trades. Be in college.
