  1. Welcome to Year Four

  2. Welcome! Good evening and thank you for attending! • Class teachers – Ellie Senior (Tues, Wed, Fri) - Cath Slattery (Mon, Thurs) • Teaching assistant – Jane Cheung

  3. Aims of this meeting • To begin our home / school partnership. • To outline the work for the coming year. • To explain practical details for the smooth running of the class. • To share information about your child e.g. medical issues. • To help you support and encourage your child at home.

  4. What your child should bring to school • PE kit (indoor and outdoor) • Water bottle • Book bag (with school reading book and homework diary) • Appropriate clothing • One small pencil case (optional) • An alert brain!

  5. The beginning of another day! • Five to nine, on the line! • If your child is late (after 8.55am) remember to report to the office. • If you are taking your child to a medical appointment remember to sign out and in again. • If your child is unwell please phone before school and keep them at home for 24 hours. • Please ensure we have up to date contact numbers for you.

  6. A typical day in Year 4 • Friday’s routine is slightly different with assembly at 9.15am. All parents are welcome to attend. • Collection – keep me informed.

  7. Behaviour Reward System Merits are given for that which is noteworthy • 10= bronze certificate • 25= silver certificate • 35 = sapphire certificate • 50= gold certificate

  11. English This term we will be looking at: Fiction – Stories with a dilemma Stories from other cultures Non-fiction – Newspaper recounts Poetry – Creating images

Reading Reading in school • Group guided reading • Follow up reading / task • Class book corner • 1:1 support • Independent choosing • Reading at home • Your child should read every day • Record checked every Thursday • If recorded and signed by you at least 4xper week, including at least 2 Q+A, merit awarded • Reading book must be from school • Reading challenge encourages range of texts

  13. YEAR 4 TERM ONE READING CHALLENGE Complete all of the challenges and win a prize. You will be questioned about each book read! NAME:

  14. Mathematics Each term the children will cover each of the following areas of maths: • Number and place value • Calculating: Addition and subtraction • Calculating: Multiplication and division • Fractions and decimals • Measurement • Geometry • Statistics

  15. Mathematics Supporting your child at home: • Use maths in everyday contexts. • Learn multiplication facts. • Learn number facts: doubles, halves, number bonds to 10, 20, 60, 100. • Encourage your child to explain to you how to use calculation strategies they have learned at school

  16. Science Changes of state Comparing and grouping solids, liquids and gases Investigating the change of state that occurs when materials are heated or cooled The water cycle Understanding evaporation and condensation Understanding the role of the water cycle on our planet

Computing E-safety Use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly Recogniseacceptable / unacceptable behaviour Know how to report concerns about content and contact Understanding computer networks Understand the different services the internet can provide, including the world wide web Use the internet to communicate and collaborate

  18. Topic (History and Geography) The achievements of the Ancient Egyptians To locate ancient Egypt in place and time. To explore what we can learn about a civilisation from artefacts. To understand the way in which farming has changed between ancient and modern Egypt. To research an aspect of ancient Egyptian life and present this in a class museum.

  19. P.E. • It is helpful if PE kit remains in school for the duration of the term • Monday: indoors – dance Friday: outdoors – basketball, cycling • Appropriate kit for the weather • Hair must be tied back and earrings out

  20. RE and PSCHE • Christianity: - Why are churches different? • Beginning and belonging: - Building relationships and coping with new situations

  21. Art and DT • Andy Warhol’s pop art - Drawing, block colour and CAD • Pop up books - Developing and constructing mechanisms

  22. Music • Led by Mrs. Allen • Tuesday afternoon fortnightly • Reinforced in class • Continuing a strong focus on the recorder

  23. Homework • Times tables and spellings will be tested on a Wednesday morning. • Homework will be sent home on a Wednesday and collected in the following Monday. • The reading challenge is to be completed throughout the term and is due before Christmas.

  24. Communication: home / school • Reading record – complete daily, including codes • Pop in before or after school to speak to me. We can arrange a longer appointment or deal with any worries or queries there and then • Email the school office • Consultation meetings during October and again in the spring • Our class page on the school website • Your child’s Starz account • School reports at the end of the summer term
