Table of Contents • Farming • Pictures • Culture Universals: Government • King Cyrus • Two New Kings • Cambyses • Darius • Quiz • Works Cited
Farming • Persians were advanced in farming for many reasons: • Fertile farmland • Many minerals helped crops thrive • Developed irrigation systems that sloped so gravity would move the water • Introduced rice and flax to Mesopotamia
Rules: Government • Different providences spoke different languages. • Practiced different religions. • Followed their own laws. • There was a local self government. • This meant that there was not only one government for all of the providences. • Different government for all places locally. • Must be kind to conquered countries.
King Cyrus • Name: Cyrus • He was known for his different method of governing. • Also known for his military genius • Believed in in honoring local customs and religions. • Did not discriminate (very unlikely for this time) • Military leader, one of the best of his time.
Two New Kings • Name: Cambyses. • He conquered Egypt. • Big deal – Egypt was one of the stronger countries. • Neglected his fathers wise example (Cyrus) • Darius took over. • Ruled humbly but powerfully. • Brought peace and stability to the empire. • Conquered what is present day Afghanistan.
QUIZ • Who was the main king that we mentioned? • Name one of the reasons why farming was so abundant. • Where was the irrigation ditch in the picture show? (Farming slide) • Clue: it’s not Persia! • What name did we give the man in the airplane? • Bonus point: Why?
