Global Literacy School Event • What: A School-Based Event Promoting Global Literacy • Where: Our School – cafeteria and gymnasium • When: May 6, 2014 – 6:00-8:30 pm • Who: School families, teachers, administrators, county elected school board representative and local businesses • Why: To promote and support Global Literacy • RSVP: By April 20, 2014

Global Literacy Event Proposal Event objective: • To promote the value of global literacy as a fundamental human right and how our school community can be proactive in supporting this cause Strategy: • Incorporating culturally responsive teaching with ELL students developing a written response to grade level questions pertaining to the importance of literacy. • Grade K-2: How is reading important to you? • Grade 3-5: Why are reading and writing skills important for all children around the world?

4. Global Literacy School Event Impact of low rates of global literacy: (Cree) -unemployment and/or underemployment -large unskilled labor force -higher poverty rates -higher infant mortality rates and -less access to health services

5. Global Literacy • Global literacy is a human rights issue that is affecting people around the world. The purpose is to raise students’ awareness about the ways literacy impacts people’s lives. • All our students will be given the chance to respond and present their responses to questions regarding literacy.

6. Guest Storyteller • Professional Storyteller Nina Jaffe -- award winning author and folklorist storyteller, specializes in multicultural storytelling, music, and community building.

7. Global Literacy School EventProgram Schedule • Program 6:00-8:30 pm • 6:00-6:20 – Meet & greet, light reception (cafeteria) • Sponsored by local businesses • 6:20 – Welcome – Principal, group of students, and school board representative say a few welcoming words • 6:35 – make our way into gym • 6:40 – 7:20 Professional multicultural storyteller – Nina Jaffe • 7:30 – 8:25 Students and parents go to three literacy workshops located in three corners of the gym. • 8:20 – Guests are asked to assess evening event • 8:25 – 8:30 Wrap-up, thank you, and hand out giveaways as guests exit

8. Global Literacy School Event Three literacy workshops for guests to participate in: (3 groups - • Reading workshop center • Writing workshop • Designated students read their responses to the question of How and Why literacy is important for all children • Guests will be divided into three groups. Each group will have 10 min. to listen to students’ responses to the question of “How reading is important to me?” “Why are reading and writing skills important for all children around the world?

9. Literacy Workshop #1 • Literacy Reading Workshop • This workshop will be led by teachers and students. Teachers and students will demonstrate how we read, make connections, predictions, and ask questions.

10. Literacy Workshop #2 • Literacy Writing Workshop • Writing station will be teacher and student led to demonstrate various ways parents and family members can participate in the development of their student’s writing skills

11. Literacy Workshop #3 • Literacy Station 3 Teachers will monitor and facilitate students who are presenting read aloud responses to discussion question • Students grade 3-5 will read their response to the question: “Why is reading and writing important to all children around the world?” • Students grade K-2 read responses to the question: “How reading is important to me.”
