Computer Science at UCC - Presentation for it@cork Intellectual Property Event Professor Cormac J. Sreenan May 2004
Talk Outline • Dept. of Computer Science • One of the largest departments in UCC • Key stats • Approx 25 academics, 10 researchers, 80 research students • Main Research Centres • Boole Centre for Research in Informatics (BCRI) • Cork Constraint Computation Centre (4C) • Centre for Efficiency-Oriented Languages (CEOL) • Centre for Unified Computing (CUC) • Mobile & Internet Systems Laboratory (MISL)
Research Focus • Artificial Intelligence • Case-based reasoning • Constraint processing • Multimedia • User interfaces • Virtual reality • Secure & Survivable Systems • Decentralised security • Models of survivability • Networking & Systems • Media content distribution • Mobile/wireless/sensor networks • Distributed Computing • Unified computing • Cluster/Grid computing • Foundations of Computing • Algorithms, Formal methods • Theory and Real-time
Recent Research Highlights • Grants • SFI - €7.5M to establish centre in Constraints • SFI - €1.5M for Constraint Programming • SFI - €1M for Real-Time Programming Languages/Theory • SFI - €1.5M for Grid Computing • HEA - €5M to establish centre in Informatics • HEA - €315K to establish UCC node on Irish Computation Grid • Plus awards from: • EU, Enterprise Ireland, Industry • Number of research students expected to exceed 100 by October 2004 (up from less than 10 in late 1990s) • Host to several high-profile international conferences and workshops
Mobile & Internet Systems Lab: MISL • Group of over 10 researchers/posgrads led by Prof C.J. Sreenan (formerly with AT&T) • Full details see www.cs.ucc.ie/misl • Areas of interest • Wireless Sensor Networks • Handover/QoS for Heterogeneous Mobile Networks • Content Distribution for Streaming media • Scalable Context-Aware Systems • Funding from Enterprise Ireland, EU, AT&T, Comnitel, FEXCO • Member of E-NEXT EU Network of Excellence
Case Study – D-Systems Project • EI funding to develop an experimental hardware/software platform for wireless sensor networks • NMRC responsible for the hardware • MISL responsible for software and protocols • Workshop to identify suitable target application • Focus on traffic/parking management (involving Cork City Council) • Retention of a consultant to prepare a commercialisation strategy • will influence field trails and follow-up
Intellectual Property Perspective • What is important for creation of IP? • World-class, international peer-reviewed research • World-class facilities and working environment • Continuity in output of high-quality, deeply technical, and creative research students • …and for creating value? • Proactive approach to assist academics to identify opportunities and encourage commercialisation • Incentive-based environment, including strategy for academic/research staff career development • Find a balance between protecting/justifying public investment and being flexible in supporting commercialisation
