Movement:One of the principles of good design. • Movement is the path our eyes follow when we look at a work of art. The purpose of movement is to create unity in the artwork with eye travel. This can be achieved by using repetition, rhythm, and action.
REPETITIONThe use of repetition to create movement occurs when elements which have something in common are repeated. Giacomo Balla Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash 1912 How does this artist use repetition to show movement?
Rhythm The result of repetition which leads the eye from one area to another. Marcel Duchamp Nude Descending a Staircase 1912 Jackson Pollack - Blue Poles, 1953
Movement Through ActionIn two-dimensional works of art, action must be implied. Implied action in a painting creates life and activity within the composition. Fredrick Remington - The Cavalry Charge, 1907
Kinetic MovementDepends on actual movement for its effect. Alexander Calder – Boomerangs, 1941 Hanging Mobile
Which type of movement is shown here in Gjon Mili’s - Gene Krupa Jam Session NYC, 1941?
How is movement shown here in Roi Lichtenstein’s – Blam, 1962?
