  1. Amasis’ Dionysus and the Maenads

  2. Key Facts • Dates from 540 BC • Decorated by the Amasis Painter • Amasis Painter is from either Egypt or Athens • Currently in the National Library, Paris

  3. Image • A depiction of Dionysus and a pair of Maenads • Dionysus is bearded, and holding a kantharos, an identifying symbol of his • The two maenads intertwine, and one is holding a hare, the other a deer • Each maenad holds a sprig of ivy

  4. The Amphora • It is round • However, the foot stabilises the amphora • The shoulders flatten, moving dramatically into the neck • The lip allows for easier pouring • As if the artist has tried to create it to store as much as possible without looking too obtuse

  5. The Design • Notice how both Maenads carry a hare and a deer • Notice how Dionysus is black figure whilst the Maenads have red skin (deliberately pale) • The spirals add geometric quality • Notice how the dress is very stylised and geometric • The straight lines on Dionysus’ robe • The intertwined Maenads seem somewhat unrealistic and out of the natural ‘order’ of things • Notice how the characters of the vase are in profile, whilst their eyes are front facing and unnaturally large • Amaisis signs his work

  6. Geometry ILLUMINATI ILLUMINATI ILLUMINATI ILLUMINATI ILLUMINATI ILLUMINATI ILLUMINATI ILLUMINATI • Notice the plunging triangular between the characters • Draws the eye to their eyes and feet, makes you examine all of them ILLUMINATI ILLUMINATI ILLUMINATI ILLUMINATI ILLUMINATI ILLUMINATI ILLUMINATI ILLUMINATI ILLUMINATI ILLUMINATI ILLUMINATI ILLUMINATI ILLUMINATI ILLUMINATI ILLUMINATI ILLUMINATI

  7. Artistic Problems • Note how the pattern is less ‘filled’ and oversimplified where the amphora curves • The handles leave an unrealistic black mark on the amphora • No colour – the vessel simply relies on reds and blacks

  8. Thanks for listening ILLUMINATI
