Modeling Inflammation Diana Stefan AwantiSambarey
Clinical Scenarios • Healthy response where pathogen is cleared and the body returns to homeostasis, • Recurrent infection where inflammation is inadequate and the pathogen cannot be completely eliminated • Persistent infectious inflammation where the pathogen levels and inflammation are high • Persistent non-infectious inflammation where pathogen is cleared but inflammation persists • Severe immuno-deficiency where pathogen has grown to saturation but the inflammatory response is very low.
Reduced model of inflammation • Kumar, R., Clermont, G., Vodovotz, Y., Chow, C.C., 2004. The dynamics of acute inflammation. J. Theor. Biol. 230, 145–155. l m p p = pathogen m = early pro-inflammatory mediator l = late pro-inflammatory mediator time

Project goals • Explore the dynamics of the chosen reduced model of inflammation and study it’s limitations. • To build a more detailed model of inflammation, including regulatory components, with an emphasis on the pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokine balance. • Sensitivity analysis.
