Coffee Promo Co. - Rwanda • Who we are: • Medical students at NUR with career interest in public health and preventive medicine • All from coffee farming families with desire to return home • Western province with poor population around 1,273 families (8,000 people)
Our Mission “To create a high quality coffee brand in Rwanda that rewards farmers with higher income enabling better health and education in the poor western area”.
Our Impact • Processed coffee for export • Community income growth from $300 thousand to $1.0 million ($250 to $800/family) • Improved health, education and economic empowerment
Current Situation-Social • Healthcare and sanitation needs (Malnutrition, medicines and soaps) • Poor medical resources (1 doctor for 18,000 people) • Educational needs ($200 send one child to school & average is 5-6 children/Family) • History of conflicts and genocide.
Current Situation-Economic • Low income from coffee ($100-$200/Year/Family) • Poor coffee quality due to a lack of nearby coffee washing station “CWS” (> 6 hrs) • Low coffee quantity due to poor training + agricultural practices Break the Cycle of low quality=low prices=low output
Market Need • Need 2015: 36 CWS in Nyamesheke District 71% of coffee processed in CWS • Current: 12 CWS in Nyamesheke District 30% of coffee processed in CWS
Step 1: Coffee Washing Station • Modern coffee processing: <6hrs • Constant good quality coffee • Fertilizer as a waste product
How to Increase Farmer Income Step 2: Increase yields per tree with training, fertilizer + pruning Step 3: Improve tree quality with new tree plantings Step 4: Increase coffee farming hectares Step 5: Training in selective harvesting Step 6: Additional complementary crops Proven techniques by Technoserve, USAID, SNV to increase income 3X-6x
Increased Output of High Quality Coffee • Two, five and seven containers (18,000 kg) for export for 2014, 2015 and 2016 • 1 container = 2,000 coffee drinkers annual consumption
Job Creation and Occupation • Hire experienced full-time General Manager and CWS operator • 200-300 jobs for 2-3 months/year in rural areas • Fertilizers from coffee pulps used for further business oriented agriculture activities by growers

Social Return Indicators • Reduce the rate of malnutrition in children to 0% in three years. • Increase the use of clean water, soap and hand washing at 100% in our 1st year. • Increase the number of the mosquito nets use at 100% in our coffee farmers especially pregnant women. • Promote HIV/AIDS education to 100% of our coffee farmers.
Investment Requirements • $70,000 for the construction of the coffee washing station • $30,000 in agriculture and health promotion materials and trainings.
Financial Sustainability • Revenue growth from $300,000 in 2014 to $550,000 in 2016 • Pre-tax, pre-interest earnings of 11% in 2014 to 14% in 2016 • Management assistance to CWS from Gates Foundation-funded Technoserve and SNV to achieve financial sustainability
