How does my production use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues? Anna Pogrebytska
Intro/Brief explanation of our idea Our initial idea was to represent the theory of Karma and how does it works. The idea consistsed of a wealthy woman that comes into her large house after going on a run, where she treats her staff disrespectfully, this builds up tension and the idea that something bad is going to happen to her. As the sequence goes on, the staff switch off the plugs which was used to turn on the hoover. It turns out that the plug timer switches on and the blender is plug in, whilst woman had her hand in the blender. This causes several actions of her, building a tension for the audience with the use of parallel editing of her and the zoom in on the timer. Due to the distraction of her phone, her hand ends up in the blender at the same time when the timer stwiching on causing her death. Our opening sequence is categorised as thriller/horror genre, due to the idea of the cause of the death, goar, and blood, etc.
Camerawork Horror/Thriller films often use close up cutaways to disctract audiences mind, which builds up tension towards the action, creating a feeling that something is going to happen. It is used in order to focus the audience on potential injury that is going to happen, so the audience know that she is going to step on that needle, we just don’t know when.
Camerawork We have used close-up shots to force the audience to focus on the specific object illustrated and diverting their attention so they won’t know what exactly is going to cause her death. We also have used high angle to demonstrated how disrespectful she is towards her stuff Although the two shot is meant to illustrate connection between characters, our two shot demonstated negative relationship between characters as well as difference between them We have used a pan shot was used to illustrate the character's path
Mise en scene • Location • Often horror/thriller films depic wealthy locations where rich people are the victims of paranormal activity. This might be due to the theory of uses and gratification. When the audience watch media to access things that they can’t access in their first-hand, direct, immediate experience (in ‘real’ life). Make up • Often natural make up is used in film, so the audience can empathise and relate more to the victim Costumes • Typical victims might be dressed in every day clothing, so the audience can feel more sympathetic towards them
Mise en scene In addition, for our storyline we have bought a brand new blender and borrowed a hoover and a mop from school Location To represent a kitchen of a rich person we have brought suitable good looking kitchen supplies such as toaster, kettle, etc. We have bought range of possible fruits to connot how she cares about her health. To add, due to the fact the we have been fiming in a boarding house we were meant to make sure we get rid of all stickers, signs and various other un-necessary objects
Mise en scene 2 Costumes Staff – simple, cheap, easy to work in constumes represented working/lower class Rich woman – fitness/sporty clothing signifying how she cares about her apeareance Make up There was no need for extra or hard make up because we wanted her to feel more natural and relatable towars the audience, so we kept our make up simple with small black eyeliner, a little bit of concealer, mascara and blush
Sound Sound motif is often used in Thriller/Horror films to build up tension and pace of the future action which engage the audience. Here is an example of such sound from film ‘Jaws’, which is similar to what we wanted to represent in our sequence to have the same affect.
Sound As well as using Premiere Pro we used Logic Pro X to chop and edit our audio files. To recreate the idea of the horror/thriller genre we wanted to include that sound motif which will build up pace/tension in order to engage the audience and their interest of what is going to happen No dialogue was used in our sequence so that we could focus more on our camera and shots, however, we used directional michrophone to record the diagetic sound that we wanted, such as chopping, blending, hoovering, footsteps when she was running and various other sounds needed for detail.
Editing Standing out aspects of our editing process and final result of the opening sequence in general, were fast paced editing and parallel editing. These editing techniques are often used in horror/thriller films to build up audiences fear, tension, adrenaline, so that they can feel they are there with the victim
Characters Cleaner 2 – working/lower class, female, young adult (20 year old) Rich woman – upper class, female, 35 to 40 year old Cleaner 1 – working/lower class, male, approximetly 50 year old
Representation of our characters and how conventional/unconventional they were • The representation of Poppy’s and Andy’s (cleaner 1 and 2) facial expressions showed the audience how unhappy they are with their employer • The fact that we have used uniforms, as cleaners costumes, connotes the way she treats them, as if they are her servents, illustrates total difference between them
Representation of our characters and how conventional/unconventional they were • Expensive looking props that we have brought in represent main character’s wealth • The facial expressions of rich woman sugnify how she places herself on the first place, how selfish, rude, moody she is • The low angle of the house was used in order to make her seem more domimant, illustrate her high statuse – therefore, helping the audience identify characters chracteristics straigh away from the beginning • The idea of her making herself a fruit smothie, as well as her sporty outfit suggests audience how she focuses on her appereance
