Subjunctive - Emotion • In English, expressions of emotion are followed by the indicative, but the subjunctive in Spanish: • I am sorry that you are sad.(indicative) • Siento que estés triste.(subjunctive)
Subjunctive - Emotion • After expressions of emotion in Spanish, you must use the subjunctive regardless whether or not the information is true.

Subjunctive - Emotion • Tememos que los jueces no castiguen a los criminales. • We are afraid that the judges aren’t punishing the criminals.
