  3. Mechanisms • While there is strong support for the GIPA principles in theory, practice lags far behind due to a broad range of socioeconomic, cultural, political and institutional barriers.

  4. Participation Barriers • The complexity of these barriers can make meaningful PLHIV engagement at international gatherings difficult: • Stigmatization • Poverty • Discrimination • Credentialism • Health-related challenges

  5. Participation Barriers • Additional barriers • Other issues taking priority • Lack of information about opportunities • Lack of capacity to engage in research • Lack of solidarity among people living with HIV themselves, reflecting the prejudices of the wider society

  6. Addressing Barriers • Continue and enhance facilitators • Valuing lived experience • Training and mentoring opportunities • Providing financial compensation • Accommodating PLWHA's needs

  7. Mechanisms • Representatives on decision-making and planning bodies • PLHIV consultations • Feedback mechanisms (i.e. evaluation) • PLHIV employment • PLHIV volunteers

  8. Advocacy • Needed: Sustained advocacy to tackle participation barriers • Travel restrictions • Impact on specific population groups: sex workers, substance users, etc. • Denial of travel visas • Investment in PLHIV participation

  9. Advocacy • How • Build our capacity • Early and intensive outreach • Resource development • Fundraising • Matching challenges • Educational club
