Update on auDA activities Paul Szyndler Public Affairs Officer APTLD Meeting Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 1 March 2010
General • Policy (incl. New 2LDs) • Regulatory Compliance • Registry and Registrars • Outreach • 2010
General • Total .au names now up to approx. 1.6 million. (Pre-auDA – 280,000, 2004- 500,000, 2007 - 1 million) • Improved security and resiliency: • UltraDNS providing secondary DNS resolution services for the .AU and 2LD.AU zones. • Third auDA-owned site in Europe completed and added to the list of authoritative name servers for .au. • A fourth site is currently being prepared in North America with deployment scheduled for the first half of 2010.
Policy Ongoing schedule of policy reviews and updates: • review of Registrar Accreditation Criteria; • implementation of policy recommendations from the 2008 Industry Competition Advisory Panel and 2007 New Names Panel; • public consultation on the Domain Renewal, Expiry and Deletion policy.
New 2LDs • In October 2009, auDA launched a significant public consultation process calling for: • proposals for the creation of new 2LDs; and • proposals for the reactivation of conf.au and info.au • auDA has only once before solicited input for the creation of new 2LDs. • The current new 2LDs process is guided by the recommendations of the 2002-03 New Names Advisory Panel and is expected to run throughout 2010.
Regulatory Compliance • Detailed audit of “org.au”, to ensure registrant policy compliance. • 18103 org.au domain names registered between 1 January 2007 and 28 February 2009. • 4,113 (23%) did not comply with the eligibility criteria. • Registrars were notified and were required to take remedial action. • In-depth review of internal complaints-handling procedures and ongoing improvement to the complaints management database.
Registry & Registrars • Extension of the Registry Licence Agreement (with AusRegistry) to 2014. Extension of the Agreement from 4 to 6 years delivering security and stability benefits and an increased likelihood of wholesale .au domain name price reductions. • Following a policy review, auDA re-opened its registrar accreditation process in June 2009. (closed at 30 registrars for a few years) • Numerous new registrars and pending applications, including overseas-based.
Outreach • Increased engagement at ICANN, IGF & APTLD • 55 grants over 4 years for Internet-related project proposals through the auDA Foundation (between $5000 and $20,000). • Establishment of Australia and NZ Best Practice Awards to recognise existing projects in four IGF theme areas (access, diversity, openness, security) • Over 232 applications from community groups for community geographic domain names (place.state.au)
2010 • Absorption of .au Community Domains (auCD) into auDA – staffing numbers up to 10 • Development of updated Strategic Plan • Alignment of staffing structures into 3 categories: Policy, Outreach & Security and Stability. • Increased international engagement • Structured outreach strategy • Alignment of Foundation, Awards and auCD.
