  1. Chemistry

  2. What is Chemistry? • Chemistry is the study of the structure, composition, and properties of matter.

  3. Well then what is matter? • Matter is anything that takes up space!

  4. 3 Phases of Matter

  5. What is matter made of? • The building blocks of matter are atoms. • These are the smallest unit of matter. • They are made of subatomic particles.

  6. Subatomic Particles of an Atom

  7. Try to Fill in your Chart… Note: An AMU(atomic mass unit) is the standard mass unit used in determining the mass of subatomic particles. It is based on a 1/12th the mass of a hydrogen atom.

  8. Atoms are the building blocks of… • Elements: Collection of atoms with the same properties. Can’t be broken down.

  9. Elements are organized into the…

  10. Each block on the chart represents one element. The space provided for each element on the table displays the atomicsymbol, atomic number, and mass number (atomic mass).

  11. Atomic Symbol • One or two letters, with the first letter always capitalized, and the second letter lowercase

  12. Atomic Number • Number of Protons. This is unique for each element. If you change this number, then you change the element

  13. Mass Number (atomic mass) • Equal to… protons + neutrons • Number of neutrons is given based on average number of neutrons typically found in each element

  14. Note! • In a non-charged atom, the number of protons equals the number of electrons • NO CHARGE Protons = Neutrons
