  1. Welcome to Back to School Night! Language Arts 8 Mrs. Lehman

  2. Who is Mrs. Lehman? • Seventh year teaching and fifth year teaching middle school • Previously taught in the Grass Valley, Woodland, and Travis school districts • Earned both Master of Arts in Education and Single Subject Teaching Credential in English from University of California, Davis • Earned Bachelor of Arts in English, with a minor in Film Studies, from University of the Pacific • Loves teaching! 

  3. What will your child be doing in Language Arts? • Trimester 1 will focus on vocabulary development, reviewing writing fundamentals, collaborative discussion skills, nonfiction texts, writing an argumentative essay, and grammar • Trimester 2 will focus on vocabulary development, literary elements and analysis, reading The Outsiders and The Hunger Games, writing a Response to Literature essay, and grammar • Trimester 3 will focus on vocabulary development, literary and poetic devices, reading and writing poetry, reading The Diary of Anne Frank (the play), and grammar

  4. What will the homework be like? • Homework is typically assigned for the entire week and written into the planner on Mondays • Planners are stamped by Mrs. Lehman to verify that homework is written down correctly • Students will typically have homework Monday through Thursday nights • Most homework assignments will be stamped for completion • If your child’s homework was submitted and graded, look for both a stamp and handwritten score

  5. How will my child be graded? • 4 Grading Categories • In-Class & Homework Assignments = 25% of grade • Essay Final Drafts = 25% of grade • Reading Assessments = 25% of grade • Vocabulary & Grammar Assessments = 25% of grade • Grade Scale: • A = 90-100% • B = 80-89% • C = 70-79% • D = 60-69% • F = 0-59%

  6. Is late work allowed? • Yes! • Late work is accepted until the Friday before trimester grades are due • Late final drafts of essays and projects will lose 10% of their original value for each day they are late • Regardless of when submitted, all late in-class and homework assignments will lose 50% of their original value (work must be complete)

  7. When can my child receive make-up instruction or extra help? • Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays • Before School (8:15-8:30) • During the First 15 Minutes of Lunch • After School (3:00-3:30) • Wednesdays • Before School (8:15-8:30) • During the First 15 Minutes of Lunch • After School (1:40-1:50) • Thursdays • During the First 15 Minutes of Lunch

  8. How will Mrs. Lehman communicate with me? • Your child’s planner • Mrs. Lehman’s website • Homework, electronic copies of assignments, announcements • Instagram & Twitter (@MrsKLehman) • Photos of homework assignments • Phone Calls & Emails * I return any emails/voicemails within 48 hours
