Adolescents & Computers What to Expect & What to Do
We all want to believe the best in our students… …but we mustn’t be naive
Yes, the educational benefits are irrefutable. Kids need to learn responsibility with technology and now is the perfect time.
How can parents help keep their child safe online (and with tech. in general)? • Read through the tips in your SCIS Middle School Parent’s Field Guide and student Survival Guide with your adolescent • Keep communication with your child open and honest. They will encounter many new things which they won’t understand. You will want them to go to you for answers, not to someone with different ethics than your family. • Be the parent. It is ok to say “No”. Your kids will get upset with you…it’s their job. Simply reassure them that you do what you do out of love. • When in doubt, use the school as the scapegoat. We’re willing to take the fall.
What Does SCIS Do? • Discontinuing administrative control • Apple Desk Top Remote • Teacher vigilance • Reimage all computers over the summer & winter months • Zero tolerance
What can you do for the computer addict? • Set a bed time (seriously) • Have them show you their work when completed • Have them work in a common area of the house or check on them sporadically • Have them place the computer and cell phone by their book bag outside of their room when it is time for bed
