  2. DealingwithConflicts at School • What are conflicts? • Conflicts are strugglesthatresultfrompeople´sdifferingneeds and wants. • Whengroups of friendstakesides, a conflict can quicklyinvolve a largenumber of students.

  3. How would you resolve the following conflicts? • 1 You and your friend are watching TV. You want to watch one program and your friend wants to watch another. What could you do? • 2 Your friend gave you some pencils belonging to her brother and he wants them back. What could you do? • 3 You have lost your friend's library book. What could you do? • 4 Your sister is always going into your room and borrowing your stuff without asking. What could you do? • 5 Your baby brother/sister chews your homework! What do you do?

  4. Ifyoufindyourselftooangrytotalkabout a problem, justwalkaway. Giveyourself time tocool off. Whenyou are calmer, youwill be more in control. Thenitwould be easiertoworktoward a peacefulsolution.

Ithelpspeoplefindsolutionsthateveryoneinvolved can accept. • Thefirstthingtodoi in conflictresolutionisto stop arguing; try totalkcalmlyabouttheproblem. • Listen respectfullytotheotherperson´s. • Aftereveryoneinvolvedunderstandswhattheproblemis, you can find a solution.

  7. Respect Cultural Differences • Peoplefromother cultures oftenspeakdifferentlanguages, celebratedifferentholidays, and wearvariouskinds of clothes. Weshouldrespectthesedifferences. • Stereotype: a beliefbasedonthinking thateveryone in a certain groupisthesame.

  8. Allgroups are made up of peoplewithdifferences, thisiswhystereotypes are oftenincorrect and usuallyunfair. • Prejudice: isanunfairnegativeattitudetoward a wholegroup. • How can weavoidstereotypes and prejudice? Weshould look at people as individuals.

  10. Classwork • Gettogether in groups of 5. • You are goingtomake a dramatizationresolving a conflict. • Itwill be presentednextweekduringtheclassperiod.
