Current Status in PF • Five (5) communities of practice are already established in the PF region. • Marketing – SNV /IFAD – based in Kampala, Uganda • Agriculture and Water Management – ICRISAT/IFAD based in Nbi, Kenya • Managing for Impact - SMIP/IFAD • Rural Finance – AFRACA/IFAD, Nbi, Kenya • Land Tenure – Managed from IFAD • Gender Mainstreaming – FAO/IFAD
Current Status Cont.. • Other knowledge initiatives include:- • AFRACA – Pan-African rural finance • Face-to-face interaction with Programmes • Rural Knowledge Network – FAO/IFAD • Linking Local Learners –FAO/IFAD • First Mile Project – AMSDP, TZ/IFAD • E-newsletter – PF Initiative
Policy Dialogue Innovations Knowledge Mgt Targeting HIV/AIDS Gender Funds Cross cutting Issues FRAO Fiduciary Oversight Knowledge Sharing Community of Practice
Thematic Areas
Current Status Cont.. • Survey showed a gap between the need to access knowledge and grass-root availability of knowledge to share. • E.g., while 89.8% needed lessons learned for their daily work, only 38.8% generated lessons learned.
Opportunities & Challenges • Country office and direct supervision by IFAD is expected to improve the learning • Regional implementation workshop has facilitated some networking between programme • Every thematic group have worked independently hence no learning across the thematic areas • Learning across country programmes has not been there but improving now
Lessons Learnt • Set up a joint web-based platform in the form of IFADAfrica – each community have developed their own site – need for a one stop KM shop • Process documentation to bring out the lessons learnt for knowledge sharing within the region and develop a competitive process of selecting the best lesson to be uploaded to the poverty portal.
Lessons Learnt Cont.. • Cross learning between the thematic communities along the areas of common interest • Possible cross learning with sister organization FIDAfrique through joint knowledge sharing along the thematic areas, exchange visits, linkage and synergy • Support and promotion for discussion forum moderators for each of the community of practice to encourage knowledge sharing
Lessons Learnt Cont.. • Need to financially support international technical assistance to the community of practice as and when required (on a need basis) • Assist the programme develop communication strategy in order to effectively implement their activities • Provide for translation of key learning documents to be made available to a wider audience in Africa
Sustainability of Network • User driven, inclusive, bottom-up organically growing knowledge management network based on a system development • Move away from an organization-centred KM systems to pooling knowledge in a broader and more inclusive way • Generate and/or co-produce knowledge to share costs
Sustainability Cont… • Facilitate the building of partnerships, linkages and synergies • Foster bottom-up conversations • Keep knowledge creation close to the knowledge creators/owners • Resource mobilization from broad base of development partners- need a clear fundraising strategy
