The South Secedes • After the election of 1860 South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union. • 10 other states decided to secede and formed the Confederate States of America. • Lincoln believed that individual states could not leave the nation and began fighting the Confederate to keep the Union together.

  3. Fort Sumter • Located in Charleston, South Carolina • Because the commander would not surrender it, SC decided to starve the fort’s 100 troops to surrender. • Lincoln sent food to the troops, but before it arrived, Confederate artillery opened fire and captured the Fort • The Civil War began

  4. Southern Advantages • Confederate soldiers fought on their own territory. • Had the nation’s most experienced war generals, Lee, A. Johnston, and J. Johnston

  5. Northern Advantages • The North had twice as much railroad track and farmland. • The North had more population than the South. • The North had more resources to feed and equip their soldiers.

  6. Battle of Bull Run • About 30,000 Troops on both sides met at Manassas, Virginia. • Hundreds of people rode out to watch the battle. • The Confederates began to win the war and the Union troops panicked and retreated. • The Union realized this was going to be a long fought war.

  7. Soldiers life • Many soldiers trained for 10 hours a day, ate hardtack (dry cracker) • Many were affected by diseases. • Prisoners of war died of diseases, starvation, and overcrowded prisons.
