General Information • Address • Nethertown Surgery • Elliot Street • Dunfermline • KY11 4TF • Contact Details • Surgery (01383) 623516 • District Nurses (01383) 622012 • Health Visitors (01383)730422 • Hours of Work • You will be expected to work between • 08:30 and 17:00 Monday to Friday • unless otherwise requested by your mentor • Dress Code • You will be required to wear your student • uniform during this placement unless otherwise • instructed. Time with the Health Visitor may • require you to dress smartly in your own clothes. • Absence • Please notify the surgery if you are unable to report for • duty on 01383 622012. • Please also remember to contact the university on • 01382 388194 to let them know of your absence.

Welcome to Nethertown Surgery, Dunfermline. • Nethertown Surgery has seven GP partners and one Associated • Partner (the nurse practitioner). • The surgery covers the Dunfermline area, including Townhill, • Wellwood, Kingseat, Halbeath, Rosyth, Crossford and Cairneyhill. • The team at Nethertown also consists of a Triage and Minor • Illness nurse, two practice Nurses, phlebotomists, District Nurses, • Health Visitors, a Practice Manager and a team of clerical and • admin staff. • Other members of the multidisciplinary team who provide • sessions in the surgery include Clinical Psychologists, a • Midwife, a podiatrist, a dietician and a smoking cessation • Specialist. • Together this forms a primary health care team whose job is not • only to treat illness as it arises but, where possible, to prevent • illness through health education and support. • We hope you enjoy your practice placement at Nethertown surgery!

Nursing Philosophy of Care • It is the aim of the community nursing team at Nethertown • surgery to provide high quality patient centred care to all • patients by utilising a holistic approach to care • within the community. • This is to maximise the health potential of not only the individual • patient but also address the wider health and social care needs of • various client groups and carers. • All members of the community nursing team shall endeavour to • work together and alongside all members of the multidisciplinary • team in a respectful, supportive way to ensure the creation and • maintenance of a professional safe working environment.

Philosophy of Education • Students will be provided with a safe and effective learning environment . • Named mentors will work in partnership with students and the university to facilitate the achievement of the agreed learning outcomes. • Students shall be encouraged to ask questions. These will be answered to the best of our ability, knowledge and best practice. • Students shall assist their own learning by identifying their own learning needs. • Students shall be treated as individuals and with respect and courtesy. • Reflection upon practice shall be promoted. • Constructive feedback will be given regularly. • Students shall be encouraged to contribute in team assessment, planning and evaluation. Their opinions shall be valued and they shall be encouraged to feel part of the team. • Students shall be encouraged to give feedback on their learning experience and make suggestions on how the learning environment may be improved.

Placement Objectives • To provide every opportunity for advancement of student learning • including developing core nursing skills and focusing on • providing learning experiences centred on the students particular • requirements. • To provide support and assistance in the development of student • non clinical skills such as communication and reflection. • To provide a more holistic learning experience through providing • opportunities to spend time with the multi professional team. • To provide opportunities for student to access and utilise all • relevant local and national guidelines and standards that • are required to ensure delivery of high quality evidence based care. • To ensure all students feel welcome and fully supported throughout • their learning experience and to feel part of the team. • To ensure students are supported not only by their mentor but also • by every other member of the team who are all dedicated to the • role of developing students understanding and skills.

The multidisciplinary Team • During this placement you will have the valuable opportunity to see • how every patients holistic care requirements are supported by • spending quality time with various members of the Multidisciplinary • team at Nethertown. • There will be opportunities to spend time with a GP, midwife, • Podiatrist, smoking cessation specialist and specialist cardiac nurse • alongside many other supporting roles that ensure every aspect of • the patients health needs are provided for. • Spending quality time with these vital services will provide you • with a more in depth, richer understanding of the various roles and • contributions these services make to improving the health outcomes • of every patient seen at Nethertown surgery.
