Ineligible down field • Rule 7-5-12 pg 59 • Ineligible A players may not advance beyond the expanded NZ on a legal forward pass before a legal forward pass that crosses the NZ in flight.
Rule 7-5-12 • Ineligible A players may not advance beyond the expanded neutral zone on a legal forward pass play BEFORE a pass that crosses the neutral zone is in flight. • If B touches the pass in or behind the neutral zone, this restriction is terminated. • An ineligible is not illegally downfield if, at the snap, he immediately contacts a B lineman and the contact does not continue beyond the expanded neutral zone.
The Penalty • Five yards from the previous spot. • Enforced under all-but-one principle.
Key Mechanic • Umpire must be on the line when the pass is released. • Umpire should read blocks for pass/run. • A step forward at snap reduces reaction time, but increases risk of injury.
What To Look For • A covered eligible receiver, usually the tight end, that goes downfield. • Linemen who go too far downfield without contacting an opponent. • Whether or not the pass crosses the line.
