Introduction • Intended as a simple solution for the forward system test • Based on packaged elements VCSEL in ‘miniature pill’ (SV 2637-001) Pin diode HFD 3013 in TO46 (TO46 still too big)
Geometry considerations • Less mechanical protection required by using packaged elements • Fibres hold by crimped capillary pipe (Ø 0.5 mm). • Capillaries hold by polyester block (Arnite). • Electrical connection VCSEL’s and PIN diode by conductive glue • Alignment of VCSEL’s by adjusting VCSEL position while glue has not yet cured • => Rapid and non-critical assembly procedure expected for most steps • For forward system test: stripped PIN diode from TO 46 housing
VCSEL to fibre coupling • sufficient for commercial receivers at forward system test (range 5 - 100 µW) • NOT sufficient for planned off detector opto receiver • Coupling efficiency 8.5%

Conclusions/ remarks • Design probably feasible for forward system test • For final SCT design • optical power small (300 uW using removed VCSEL lens • better with additional focussing lens ( > 400 µW from 1 mW optical power) • Drawbacks of focussing lens • more length of opto package • also alignment in Z critical • 3013 pin diode may be produced as a special in miniature pill or comparable housing for big quantities
