  8. Fast Facts • Spanish is the main language in most of the countries of Middle America. • However, many of the indigenous people speak their own languages. • You may also be surprised to know that people in Belize speak English.

  9. Honduras • In Honduras, most of the people are mestizo.

  10. Guatemala • In Guatemala most of the people are indigenous.

  11. Costa Rica • In Costa Rica most of the people are descended from the Spanish.

  12. Belize • In Belize more than 40 percent of the people have African ancestors.

  13. Mexico • Blends Native American and Spanish Influences

  14. Art of Middle America • The art of Mexico reflects both its Spanish and its Native American Cultures.

  15. The Church • Religion is important to the people of Middle America. • The Spanish settlers were Roman Catholic. Spanish missionaries converted many Native Americans. • Today, most of the people are Catholic. However, Native Americans have blended their religions with Christianity.

  16. Fighting Injustice • Catholic priests and bishops have spoken out against injustice in Middle America. • Injustice occurs when people’s rights are taken from them. • Also, ordinary people have worked to end poverty and injustice by starting health clinics, farms, and organizations.

  18. Life in the City • Since the population is so big, it has made it hard for young people to find jobs in the country. • Today, most people in Middle America live in cities.

  19. Moving to the United States • American companies open factories in Mexico because costs are lower there. • Mexican workers assemble parts to make products that will be sent out of Mexico.

  20. The wealthy people in cities live like wealthy people in the United States. • Life in the city can be hard for the poor. • There are not enough places to live. It is not easy to find work. • It is hard to feed a family on the low wages the poor earn. • However, schools are better in cities than in the Mexican country.
